Five Benefits of Installing New Windows

Are you in need of new windows or are you considering a replacement window installation? Either way, it’s important to ensure that your windows are working efficiently. Old windows can be prone to drafts, can reduce energy efficiency, and can decrease the effectiveness of your design.

With the right windows, you can:

Maximize Daylight

One of the main purposes of windows in your home is to let natural light into space. Your home feels brighter and fresher with more natural light entering your rooms.

Skylights are a great way to do this – they increase the amount of light entering your home by 30%. Skylights help balance the light that is coming through your windows and therefore reduces glare and creates a more open feeling. Bay windows are another popular option to help you maximize daylight throughout your home.

Did you know that as you age, your eyes require double or triple the amount of light to see? This means an investment in installing or replacing your windows to let in more natural light is an investment in your vision!

Energy Efficiency

By allowing more natural light into your home, you will reduce the number of hours using other electrical light sources. The benefits of this are twofold. First, it will help you save on your monthly utility bill as a result of cutting your electricity consumption. Secondly, solar energy is a renewable resource that can help light and heat your home without causing negative damage to the environment.

Visual Appearance

Many interior decorators suggest bow windows, bay windows, and skylights simply for their visual appeal. These options add longevity in the décor world making them a smart investment aesthetically. In turn, the increased sunlight will highlight other décor efforts you have made.

More Privacy

Cities are becoming increasingly dense and finding a home that does not have a neighbour directly next door (and visible through a window) is often difficult. The main downside to this trend is a lack of privacy within the home. Often, people feel that they are on display for their neighbours through their windows.

To fix this problem, people install blinds that they keep closed much of the time. When the blinds are closed, the amount of natural light entering your home is limited.

Double hung windows or casement windows that are positioned high on the wall are popular ways to increase privacy in areas like a bedroom or bathroom, but arguably installing skylights is the only way to ensure you still receive sunlight while also maintaining complete privacy.

In new homes that are being built, it is often suggested to install just skylights in rooms such as the bathroom and the bedroom where you desire increased levels of privacy.

Overall Wellbeing

have shown that sunlight and vitamin D increase overall well-being. With a sufficient amount of sunlight, you are likely to be in a better mood, feeling healthier and happier overall. Large double-hung windows, casement windows and skylights can help with this even in the winter when it is too cold for you to spend a lot of time outdoors. Instead, you can soak up the sun’s rays and natural light from the comfort of your own home.

Next time you are ready for new windows or a replacement window installation, consider trying a new style of window! You won’t regret taking advantage of the benefits large casement windows, double hung windows and skylights offer, including increased light, improved energy efficiency, heightened levels of privacy, and overall happier, healthier way of life!

E-Gress Windows: Everything You Need To Know

Whether you are looking to replace the windows in your home or simply want to familiarize yourself with proper safety regulations, e-gress windows play an important role as they provide emergency exits in the event of a fire.

What are e-gress windows?

The term “egress” is defined as the action of going out or leaving a place. Similarly, e-gress windows must be large enough (determined by provincial regulations) for entry or exit in case of an emergency. Generally, they are required in specific locations in a house such as in the basement or in a bedroom. The windows must meet specific criteria such as size, quality, and various other requirements in order to qualify as an e-gress window.

It’s important to make sure you are hiring a contractor you trust to ensure your windows meet the provincial fire code standard. Failure to comply is both a violation of the law and extremely dangerous in the event of an emergency.

What is the minimum size of e-gress windows?

E-gress windows must have unobstructed openings with areas of at least 0.35 meters2 and with no dimension less than 380 millimeters. As well, It is recommended that the sill of the window is not higher than 1.5 meters above the floor for easy access in an emergency.

When should you get e-gress windows?

According to The Public Health Act, for buildings of 3 stories or less, each bedroom should have at least one outside window which may be opened from the inside without the use of tools or special knowledge.

How to Choose the Right Replacement Windows for Your Home

Choosing the right replacement windows for your home can be a difficult decision. For one thing, it is a long-term investment, and second, there are so many variables to consider. New windows can help block out noise, make your home look more attractive, decrease drafts, and reduce your carbon footprint. However, not all windows are alike and choosing the right ones for your home and your needs is key in ensuring you are happy with the final result.

Here are 3 major factors to consider when choosing replacement windows:

Don’t overspend on options.

It’s easy to get caught up with upgrading, but keep in mind that upgrades can easily add fifty percent or more to the base cost of the window. Rather than purposeless add-ons, focus on features that add value. Since most people aren’t proficient in the vast variety of features available, it’s important to hire a contractor you trust to explain what types of add-ons are beneficial and which are unnecessary based on your needs.

Match windows to climate.

Since Canadian winters tend to be cold and snowy, it’s important to choose windows with good insulation capabilities as this helps reduce heating costs and prevent cold air from seeping in. If you live in a region that is especially cold and very windy, you want to make sure you choose a design that provides good wind resistance.

Price doesn’t indicate performance.

Many people are under the misconception that higher prices guarantee better quality, however, this is simply not the case. While there are certainly good quality windows that come at a higher price point, there are many very good more affordable options as well. Do your research and hire a contractor who is trustworthy to ensure you are getting the best for your dollar.

Perhaps your old windows are no longer getting the job done right – and it’s something you can’t ignore. The water leaks can cause extensive damage, including mold. How Efficient Are Your Energy-Efficient Windows?

The warm weather is here! As much as we love the idea of hot sunny weather, some of us dread the cost of energy bills to keep our homes cool all summer. It brings to mind the question of whether or not your home is as energy-efficient as possible, or is the money you pay for energy bills just seeping out the cracks of old windows and doors in your home?

When it comes to energy-efficient windows, they consist of a vinyl window frame and are usually made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) with ultraviolet light (UV) stabilizers to keep sunlight from breaking down the material. Essentially, you can enjoy the natural sunlight coming through your home without it completely heating the area it reaches. A vinyl window frame is a strong, durable, yet low-maintenance option. It effectively reduces heat transfer and helps insulate your home better. Another way to amp up the efficiency of windows is to choose a window type with multiple panes. With this option there are two panes of glass, with an air or gas-filled space in the middle. It insulates much better than single pane glass.

If you’re on a tight budget then energy-efficient windows would be the wisest choice that will save you costs. ENERGY STAR rated windows can save you approximately $126–$465 a year when replacing single-pane windows for an average home in Ontario.

Emergency Egress Windows For Bedrooms

In Ontario, an Egress window is not required in a bedroom. However, it is still a preference for most homeowners to want an egress window installed in all the bedrooms of the home.  In the case of a fire, the bedroom window is not typically the the ordinary escape route but if the only escape route leading from the bedroom to safety is filled with smoke or worse, blocked with fire, having an Egress window in the bedroom could mean the difference between life and death.

According to the International Residential Code, a bedroom window can be between 24 and 44 inches from the floor, it needs at least 5.7 square feet for the opening, and it must measure no less than 24 inches high and 20 inches wide.

How To Wash Your Home’s Windows Like A Pro

It’s not a task you would necessarily jump with excitement to do, but it’s one well-worth it when you can finally look out through sparkly clean windows and take in a clear view of the outdoors.  Typically, the exterior windows of your home should be washed twice a year.

You won’t need to hire a professional to clean your windows like a pro with these tips:

  1. Using a large bucket, combine hot water and dishwashing liquid, but not too much soap.  The less suds the better.
  2. Another at home cleaning solution that works well is one part and one part distilled vinegar.
  3. For picture windows, using long cloth head of a strip applicator work best.  It soaks up enough soapy water so that you don’t have to keep going back and forth for more while effectively loosening the dirt off the glass.
  4. Wipe clean with a squeegee.  Starting at the top, swipe the edge of the squeegee in an ‘S’ motion.  At the end of each ‘S’ motion dry off the edge of a squeegee with a rag and continue.
  5. Use another dry rag, wipe the edges to completely dry the window.

For multi pane windows, you’ll want to use a handheld sponge or scrubber to clean each separate glass pane of the window as well as finding a squeegee that will fit between each pane.

Windows That Make a Small Space Look Bigger

The comfort of windows is often overlooked because it’s so much part of everyday living.  It’s not until the shades are drawn or until you’re in a room without windows, you start to feel the need for open air and natural light to spill into the room to give yourself that extra comfort.

No matter the size of the room, windows open up the area taking the room beyond what it really is. As long as the eyes can stretch beyond the room, it begins to feel more spacious. That’s comforting, especially when you live in a family home with children and a lot of activity.

There are certain window types that particularly provide a sense of roominess like bay or bow windows that project outside of your home. They literally give your more space and allow more light to open up your space.

Changing your window type to one that has more glass can also give more openness to the room like an all glass casement window design that is secured by a hinge on either the left or right side and opens and closes similar to a door. This minimalistic approach will appear sleek and less cluttered in a small space.

Another helpful design tip: Try removing window dressings to allow more open space against your walls and windows. It will instantly open up the room visually.
